Donate, Use Curbside Pickup, or Hire a Hauler for Old Furniture?

Choose by the item’s condition, your deadline, and the carrying route. A clean working chair has different options than a torn sleeper sofa on a second floor.

Donate furniture that is clean, complete, assembled, and genuinely usable. Use county curbside service when the item is accepted, you can place it correctly, and timing is flexible. Hire a full-service hauler when the carrying, access, volume, or schedule is the hard part. Confirm every option before moving the piece.

When donation fits the item

Goodwill Southwest Florida says it accepts clean, usable items in sellable condition. Its guide lists assembled, gently used furniture with minimal chips and no large stains, rips, or tears. It also warns that large or heavy items may not be accepted at every donation site.

Goodwill’s current “do not accept” list includes mattresses, box springs, entertainment centers, disassembled furniture, sofa beds, and several other bulky categories. Major appliances may qualify for home pickup only in some cases when newer and working. A photo and a direct confirmation can save a wasted trip.

Donation condition check

  • Is the piece clean and dry?
  • Is the frame stable and the upholstery free of major tears or stains?
  • Are all parts, cushions, drawers, hardware, and shelves included?
  • Is the piece assembled if the organization requires that?
  • Did the receiving location confirm this specific item?

When Lee County curbside service fits

Lee County says residents can set bulky items such as couches, sectionals, hot tubs, mattresses, fence sections, and appliances next to regular garbage. If an item does not fit in the regular truck, the hauler can notify the home office and a separate truck may come within three business days. Call Lee County Solid Waste at 239-533-8000 about a specific item or address.

Curbside service does not solve the inside carry. Before choosing it, decide who can move the furniture, whether the building permits the set-out, and whether rain or an HOA rule makes early placement a problem. Lee County’s curbside guidance says not to set out trash more than 24 hours before the scheduled collection day.

When full-service hauling fits

A hauling crew is useful when furniture is upstairs, behind a gate, inside a condo, too awkward for the household, or part of a larger cleanout. Describe sleeper mechanisms, powered recliners, adjustable bases, glass, stone, oversized sections, and narrow turns before scheduling.

Do not assume the item will be donated merely because it is usable. Ask what happens when a receiving organization declines it and whether any disposal fees or access charges are included in the estimate.

Questions to ask before anyone arrives

  • Is inside removal included?
  • Does the estimate include stairs, elevators, long carries, or dismantling?
  • What happens if the item is larger or heavier than described?
  • Is donation attempted only when an organization confirms acceptance?
  • Will the scope be confirmed before loading?

See the furniture removal service for inside pickup planning. If the piece is mixed into a larger garage project, use the four-zone garage cleanout plan.
